Beginner Acoustic Guitar

Want to know how to play the chords, riffs, licks, and scales that will allow you to play those mean solos?

If you love music then you no doubt, at one time or another, have said to yourself "Man, I wish I could play the guitar." I know I have. I even got myself a cheap guitar one year for Christmas and learned a couple of tunes and it was a blast.

Tip: An excellent place for beginners or players with some advanced abilities to learn online is this Jamorama course. They offer a free AND paid course. It's pretty cool, pretty popular, and you should take advantage of the free stuff.

What is an 'acoustic guitar'?

A guitars produces sound by the vibration of its strings. Since the string can only produce so much sound on its own, it needs to be made louder. Sound travels through that 'hole' in the body, vibrates with a sound board inside and produces a louder sound than the strings could do on their own.

What are the best guitars?

Like any popular industry, there are many different type/brands, but there are always a few that seem to stand out. Here are a few of those:

Martin

As one of the biggest flattop acoustic guitar makers, Martin has been around since the 1830's. With innovations like the 14 fret neck, which allows you to play a greater range of notes, and the dreadnought guitar, it is/was said to be a favorite of Eric Clapton, Joan Baez, and Johnny Cash.

Gibson

One of the more well known guitar makers, Orville Gibson started this company in Kalamazoo, MI in the 1890's, where it stayed until the early 1970's. Arguably it's most popular model, the Les Paul, was named for the famous player of the same name in 1952. The list of famous musicians who use them and has used them is as long as.....well, I can't think of anything good so trust me it's pretty much anybody you can think of in the music industry.

Fender

Fender makes all types of 6-strings, but Leo Fender is for sure known for designing one of the first commercially successful solid-body electric bass guitars.

Rickenbacker

They are not and were really never a 'player' in the acoustic guitar game, but putting the world's first electric guitars into general production in 1932, I had to mention them here. If you are a fan of The Beatles this is what they were making there sounds with in the 1960's.

Alright, so weather you want to start the next big rock band, perform at open mic nights, or just learn how to play a few tunes at the camp fire, learning the guitar can and will be very rewarding for that creative juice we all have a little bit of inside us. At the very least, sign up for this Jamorama guy's free course and see where it might take you.

Who knows?

I think Fenders are the all time best. Just the quality and sound alone are the second to none.

Learn Guitar Lessons - Songwriting - Part Three

By Peter Pentelbury
In our first two articles on guitar songwriting we touched upon the basics of understanding the pattern in a song that repeats itself - where the verse and the chorus work together to make the song interesting, and memorable. And that you should always try to get at least part of the song or melody line instantly recognisable, and listener friendly. The part known as the "hook" that draws the listener in and gets them singing along.
